  • Support worker Last updated by Katherine: 30-Nov-2017

I have no experience in social work but I’d like to try my hand at it. I’m in my mid 40s and have just come out of a turbulent period at home with a troubled teenager. Had it not been thanks to the help of a support worker the complicated period we’ve gone through would have been a lot more wearing than it already was. I was able to learn a lot from the professional that led us through and I’d love to be able to do the same for others now that we’re over it and after learning so much about how to handle it-

    • Strictly speaking, as far as I know, to become a care worker, there’s no training required, though caring experience, whether official or unofficial, will always be a plus. You’ll need DBS clearance though. If what you want is to become a social worker, you need to have a degree in social work. If you’ve already got a degree in a different subject, then you could take a master’s degree in social work. This is a vocational profession, so if you really have the passion to become a professional in this field, my advice is that you don’t let lack of training stop you, if you really want to you’ll succeed because the time invested in training won’t feel like a waste of time. I hope this helps.

  • Why can’t I work if I’m already nearly 13? Last updated by Sam: 22-Nov-2017

I’m 12, nearly 13, and I’d like to work to help my mum+dad. I’m told they can’t hire me because I’m not 14, but I will in a couple of months’ time. Are things that rigid that I cannot start even if I’m nearly the legal age? Even in a supermarket as warehouse worker they won’t take me. I don’t understand how 2 months can make that much of a difference!

    • Regulations on working ages are very strict. They have to be! otherwise there could be a lot of abuse, but also because if there’s not a steady framework, things would end up getting out of hand. This doesn’t mean that you cannot start researching possible options and be ready to apply the moment you turn 13. It’s always good to see you people with drive!
