A practice nurse is an important part of the primary care team that ensures the well-being of service users. Based at a GP surgery, these professionals support doctors by providing routine nursing and medical care and are responsible for the assessing, screening and treatment of patients of all ages
These individuals may take blood, specimens and swabs, treat and dress wounds, give vaccinations, and offer general medical advice, such as information on family planning or health-related travel advice. They may also set up and run clinics for those suffering from diabetes, asthma or a heart condition, for example.
Depending on the size of the GP surgery, the workload may be shared with other practice nurses and may require working one or two evenings per week. All candidates must be fully trained nurses with at least two years’ experience, although specific job training is provided at the surgery. Salaries begin at £25,500 and could reach up to £34,000.
