The position of business analyst brings daily challenges and responsibilities aimed at troubleshooting problems and providing solutions via intensive computer-based research and analysis. Essential tasks involve identifying areas within a business which need updating or improving, often working in tandem with the firm’s IT department. An understanding of customers’ needs in relation to the performance of the business and the provision of competitive commercial solutions is an everyday task in this job, as is a high level of business intelligence and technical skills
Strong communications skills are a crucial requirement in this position, as technical solutions often need non tech-based inter-departmental explanations, especially when dealing with support teams. Task analysis and evaluation of surveys and workshop results are other everyday tasks. This position gives great career opportunities, with mandatory entry-level requirements including an MBA degree. A background in computer programming and good work experience are also important.
Entry-level salaries start at around £30,000, with experienced employees receiving around £45,000 on average, although in certain business sectors such as the banking industry, wages may be much higher.

Description

Business Analysts are required to investigate and analyse business activities to make them more efficient by using IT resources. They can create an integrated IT system to deal with dispatch, payments, orders, and stock control. These professionals can work in-house for their company or perform their duties for a third party, such as software house or a consultancy firm.

Business Analysts usually perform many of the following tasks:
• Creating IT solutions.
• Providing staff training.
• Testing systems.
• Advising senior management.
• Identifying areas for improvement.

It is recommended to have degrees related to programming and IT subjects. A specific qualification for this area is the Diploma in Business Analysis offered by the Information Systems Examination Board.

There are awards for people working on this area such as the Certified Business Analysis Professional offered by the International Institute of Business Analysts. This qualification can be obtained by demonstrating expertise in this area through the CBAP application process and passing the CBAP examination of this institution.
