There are numerous roles available in the education sector. These could involve teaching in a primary school, secondary school, college or university. Teaching in a primary school requires job holders to plan a weekly curriculum to deliver to their class of a maximum of 30 students. Secondary school teachers specialise in a particular subject and will have between four and seven classes every day, each with around 30 students. College teachers have smaller classes and prepare their students for national A level examinations. Teachers at university level are highly specialised in their subject area and provide lectures on a particular topic to up to 500 students at a time
To teach in a primary school, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree. Those wishing to teach in a secondary school or college must have a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE). University lecturers are often expected to have a minimum of a master’s degree in their subject, while many go on further and hold a doctorate in their area of expertise
Due to the huge variation in roles available in education there is also a huge salary range, beginning at around £14,000 and extending up to £51,000.
