Janitor
The role of a janitor, also known as a cleaner or custodian, is an essential part of the everyday use of a commercial property or public organisation such as a school or government building. The person in this position not only works to ensure that a given facility is clean and ready for use, but also helps to ensure it is a safe place for other employees and members of the public
Much of this individual’s time will be spent in the cleaning process, which includes the removal of garbage and other waste in addition to clearing and washing surfaces such as windows, floors, doorways and fixtures like furniture and tables. This will usually involve the use of machinery such as vacuums, floor polishers and carpet cleaners
Other tasks are often done in the support of safety; these may include snow and ice removal, ensuring unauthorised areas are locked, marking off wet surfaces and notifying managers of areas in need of maintenance or repairs
The average salary for a janitor working in the United Kingdom is about £17,000.
