Payroll Administrator

When a business does not outsource its payroll activities, it will hire an in-house payroll administrator to do the job. The main responsibility of this position is to arrange salary payments for the employees and maintain confidential records concerning the company finances.
A payroll administrator covers every aspect of the company payroll. They keep track of hours worked, taxes deducted and other payments like bonuses and overtime. When there’s an error in an employee’s pay, the administrator is responsible for making all the necessary corrections.
Knowledge of computer software like Quickenbooks, Mikal Systems or Intuit Payroll is needed for this job. Most new employees will be trained in the specific software system the company uses, but a basic understanding of computer systems is important. Knowledge of government tax law is another vital thing
Specific training in payroll entry, processing, coding and database management is possible at college. Programmes also exist for fundamental payroll certification. Any special training will greatly increase the chances of finding a job quickly. Salaries average £31,000 per annum.

  • Payroll Zinnia

I'd like to work as payroll administrator, and I'm not clear whether I need to have bookkeeping knowledge or not to get a job. Some people tell me I do and others that not necessarily.

    • Carson:

I think it's not strictly necessary, but if you don't have any knowledge of it you're likely to score behind those who do have knowledge and experience on bookkeeping.

      • Zinnia:

I guess you're right. In fact I was considering finding a course to get knowledge and practice. I definitely will.
