Performing Art

Employment in the world of performing art is not just limited to actors, dancers, musicians and other performers; there are numerous individuals behind each production, each providing a fundamental element to a show. Additionally there is a consistent need for those able to teach the art in a variety of institutions, including conservatories and universities
This field is extremely competitive though successful individuals often find it highly rewarding. Performers typically need to have formal training through a conservatory or university; this often means at least a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, music, performance or a similar field. However, experience is the most advantageous qualification for all positions, including those behind the scenes. For performers, the right look, attitude and work ethic is also crucial.
Remuneration for those working in the field of performing art varies widely and the pay is typically project-based, particularly for performers. For example, the average weekly pay for a dancer is £420 to £480, though this extends up to £550 per week for West End performers. Teaching positions range from £20,000 per annum to more than £50,000 per annum for tenure at a prestigious institution.
