Technical Sales
Those working in technical sales must have good interpersonal skills and be capable of effectively communicating their knowledge in order to close a sale. They must thoroughly understand the workings of the products they are selling, so that they can provide a sufficient amount of product information to potential customers. Technical sales combines the job of selling with technical or scientific know-how to introduce and promote technical products to businesses, organisations and individuals.
Typical employers are wholesale and manufacturing companies, and much of the working day is spent travelling to meet various clients. Once on-site, a technical sales person must explain and demonstrate their product and, through a process of persuasion and negotiation, endeavour to make a sale. There is also collaboration with engineers, scientists and inventors in order to present customers with a fully customised product
Technical sales workers sometimes require a degree in engineering, chemistry or a science subject, along with previous relevant experience. Product knowledge is, however, the most attractive asset for employers. Salaries begin at £20,000 and could rise to £28,000, with higher rates in the London and South West regions.
