Aircraft Mechanic
An aircraft mechanic performs one of the most important roles in keeping aeroplanes operating and airworthy as well as contributing to an airline’s reputation. Members of the public trust that technicians have performed their duties well, or they would be reluctant to board aircraft.
Aircraft mechanics are responsible for everything from refuelling and checking water and oil reservoir levels through to a major power unit overhaul or fuselage repairs. Junior job-holders are employed on general maintenance while those individuals with lengthy experience are usually assigned a specific task or section of an aircraft.
Successful applicants for new positions will have GCSEs and a mechanical background as well as a SEMTA NVQ aircraft mechanics level 2 certificate or a City & Guilds 2661 certificate in aeronautical engineering. Candidates need to have an eye for detail and to be able to carry out maintenance in line with the airline industry’s stringent standards.
Capable individuals will find situations at major airports and aerodromes throughout the UK. Most positions require incumbents to work an eight-hour shift with 24/7 cover. Salaries for junior technicians start at around £15,000 and go up to £40,000 for highly experienced people.
