Hard-to-Fill Positions Analysis in United Kingdom – October 2017

This article presents a brief summary of the hard-to-fill positions during October 2017 in the UK. To extract and analyse the data, we have used our big data technology tool Job Market Insights, which provides us with an in-depth picture of the job market trends and the hard-to-fill positions in the jobs market.

About Hard-to-Fill positions. Hard-to-fill positions are vacancies being posted multiple times on paid sites with periods of up to 2 weeks in-between.  These are hot leads, positions that are being paid for by companies and are in desperate need of qualified candidates.

Firstly, we are going to give details of the the hard-to-fill positions from a general point of view at a national level.  We will also show the characteristics of these types of vacancies based on the data from the city or cities that register a representative amount of job offers in each of the regions.

HARD-TO-FILL POSITIONS IN THE UK – GLOBAL VIEW

In October 2017, the total number of hard-to-fill positions (10,884) accounted for 1% of the total vacancies published. In the sections that follow, we are going to provide information from different perspectives, looking at: the most frequently requested job title, salary range, location and issuing company.
If we analyse in terms of the most frequently requested job title, we can see that vacancies from Social Services and Sales sectors come out on top. From a salary perspective, almost 55% of the hard-to-fill positions are in salary ranges of less than £40,000 and around 28% have salaries less than £20,000.  Generally speaking, these are vacancies that are demanding customer service jobs with low salaries.
London is the location with the significant majority of hard-to-fill positions, accounting for 21% in total. We can see that the company ranking is dominated by large companies and organisations from the commodities and Health sectors.

HARD-TO-FILL POSITIONS BY LOCATION

ENGLAND

England maintains the total of 1% of hard-to-fill positions as a proportion of the total number of job offers in the market. The proportion of vacancies by location is similar both in terms of the global distribution of job offers and the distribution of hard-to-fill positions. The main yet subtle difference is in Birmingham, which is the third-placed city in England in terms of its total number of job offers published, but at the bottom of the top 5 in terms of its hard-to-fill positions.

London – Hard-to-Fill Positions in October’17

Around 24% of England’s hard-to-fill positions are concentrated in London. This percentage is significantly higher than that of the other cities that have published large numbers of job offers.  Manchester, Bristol, Leeds and Birmingham account for only 9% of England’s total number of hard-to-fill positions.

In terms of the most frequently requested job titles, the hard-to-fill positions tend to be in the Hospitality sector but can also be related to business analysis and development.

From the point of view of salaries, the sub-£40,000 salary ranges are where most of these positions are concentrated. Compared with the global UK market, the sub-£20,000 range only represents around 12%, practically half the respective percentage.

The consulting firm PwC, the banking and investment group Goldman Sachs and commodities businesses such as Sainsbury’s top the rankings of companies with hard-to-fill positions.

SCOTLAND

The proportion of hard-to-fill positions compared to the total job offers in Scotland is 1.5%, slightly higher than that of England and the UK. There are no significant differences between the main locations in terms of the percentage of hard-to-fill positions as a proportion of the total number of job offers, and the global market distribution.

Glasgow and Edinburgh alone account for around 40% of the hard-to-fill positions in Scotland, as described below.

With regard to the most frequently requested job title, the most hard-to-fill positions are mainly in the Manufacturing and Logistics sectors.

From a salary perspective, around 60% of the hard-to-fill positions are concentrated in the sub-£40,000 salary ranges.

The National Health Service tops the rankings of companies with hard-to-fill positions.

We can see that the most frequently requested job titles come from very diverse sectors.

In terms of salaries, more than half of the positions do not offer more than £40,000 per year. More than 35% have salaries below £20,000.

The National Health Service remains the company with the highest number of hard-to-fill positions.

The proportion of hard-to-fill positions in terms of the total jobs market in Wales is in line with the most common percentage of 1%. Cardiff and Newport alone account for around 33% of the hard-to-fill positions in Wales, as described below.

The most frequently requested job titles are related to the role of Assistant Manager. In terms of salaries, more than 60% of the positions offer no more than £40,000 per year. This percentage is slightly higher than that of the other locations mentioned so far.

The same as in Cardiff, we can see that the most frequently requested job titles come from very diverse sectors. The salary range of less than £40,000 per year includes more than 45% of the hard-to-fill positions, which is similar to that of the other locations described in this article.  Around 30% of the hard-to-fill positions are published by large companies from the Hospitality and Construction sectors.

NORTHERN IRELAND

The proportion of hard-to-fill positions compared to the total number of job offers in Northern Ireland is less than that of the other regions mentioned, accounting for just 0.5% of the total.

Belfast – Hard-to-Fill Positions in October’17

More than 45% of the hard-to-fill positions are concentrated in the Northern Ireland capital. In terms of job titles, we can see vacancies in the IT and Engineering sectors are among those which have seen the highest demand. The Hospitality sector and seasonal work also account for a significant number of hard-to-fill positions.

From a salary perspective, around 27% of the hard-to-fill positions are concentrated in the sub-£40,000 salary ranges. Similar to London, the consulting firm PwC tops the rankings of companies with hard-to-fill positions.

Generally speaking, we can see that the hard-to-fill positions published during October are, on the one hand, demanding, low-skilled vacancies with a clear customer focus and modest salaries, mainly from the Hospitality and Social Services sectors. On the other hand, there are highly-skilled positions from the Engineering and IT sectors, required by large companies and international consulting firms, due to the growth and expansion or their high rates of employee turnover, which is a common feature of technology consulting firms and outsourcing companies.
