Can a nurse fall in band 8?
I’ve been a qualified nurse for just under a year. I had always been under the impression that nurses could qualify for nhs band 8. Just recently an experienced nurse told me that there’s no way a nurse can qualify for it, that nurses fall into bands 5 and 6. Does anybody know if this is so? That nurses cannot access band 8, please?

That’s correct, a staff nurse will always find herself in band 5; band 6 in the case of charge nurses. Unfortunately, in the UK nursing is poorly paid and it doesn’t look like there’s any change for the better in the near future.09-May-2018

Hi, what’s been said about bands 5 and 6, is true for most cases, the commonest ones. However, it’s also true that if you specialise and and work towards higher qualifications you can move on towards higher bands. Consultant matrons would be an example of this. Also, you must keep in mind that nhs banding may vary between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. If in doubts, I would contact the rcn, they should be able to help.14-May-2018
