Medical Devices

The position of biomedical engineer involves the design of medical devices using engineering and materials technology. Products include joint replacements and special needs rehabilitation equipment as well as robotic surgical instruments and other clinical equipment for use in hospitals and surgeries.
Biomedical engineering positions are advertised by the NHS, medical equipment manufacturers’ research departments and independent or academic research laboratories. In a hospital setting, the position involves supervising the use of biomedical equipment. Daily work activities will depend on the sector, but always involve a good knowledge of IT and computer software as well as mathematical models, used to develop and test new materials and equipment.
Liaising closely with medical personnel, technicians and manufacturers requires good communications skills, as does the necessity of teamwork. The position also involves organisational and documenting skills in setting up and monitoring clinical trials as well as staff training and evaluation.
Educational requirements include a relevant degree in life sciences, mathematics, engineering, physics or medical science, with a degree with honours necessary for professional recognition and advancement
Salaries for graduate trainees start at £22,000 per annum in the NHS, rising to between £28,000 and £38,000 on average and up to £97,000 at consultancy level.
