Optometry

Optometry has become one of the most flexible careers in the medical profession. The job holder is primarily involved in testing the eyesight of patients, diagnosing vision problems, and prescribing corrective lenses or contact lenses. Not only do optometrists recognise specific eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma, they are also familiar with other diseases which may affect vision, such as diabetes
Although some optometrists work in hospitals, most have independent high street practices or work for national or regional chains. Optical manufacturing, teaching and research are other career options for optometrists.
More experienced persons in this role may train, supervise and manage staff. Managing the retail aspects of vision care products and communicating with their salespeople are other common optometry duties.
Optometrists must obtain degrees from one of the eight UK universities offering degrees in the field, after which they may begin earning annual salaries of between £14,000 and £17,000. This annual wage increases to between £37,500 and £53,600 after five working years.
