Scientists fulfil a highly important role in society, working in medicine, engineering, food production, manufacturing, the environment, and many other fields. Working in a scientific role requires a Masters and Bachelors degree and/or a PhD in a specific area of science. Those wishing to go into teaching will also require the relevant teaching qualifications in order to gain employment
The need to have exceptional verbal and written communication skills is of paramount importance in many scientific jobs as the individual is often required to explain findings to other members of staff or the public. Working with specialist scientific machines, equipment and dangerous substances also calls a careful person with a safe approach to working
In the UK, the average scientific job in a laboratory will command a salary of £25,489 to £35,946, and higher for more expert roles, such as microbiology or ones that require managerial or supervisory roles. Profit sharing, commissions and bonuses all depend on the employer, but can add between 1-3 per cent of an annual salary. Scientific jobs in engineering and the oil and gas industries generally command the highest salaries.
