  • Do stonemasons make good money? Daniel

Is it true that stonemasons make very good money? I’m in construction and have been doing my bit to gain experience as a stonemason. As a general rule, any specialised activity gives you better wages than a general one, so I assumed that stonemasons get good wages. Recently someone said the wages a better than good. Is this really so?

    • Payne:

They are the elite trade and only in competition with the Egyptians and Aztecs. You will never be out of work.

      • Freddie:

I agree Payne. The only thing to bear in mind is that figures will come determined by several different factors, like location, experience or type of contract. For example in London you’re easily likely to get £23 P/H, but in other areas it’ll be more in the line of £15 p/h. You start moving up from the average hourly rate as you get more and more experience. All the same, though being good, wages are not particularly remarkable.

        • Junior P.:

There’re also other aspects that will determine the pay. One is whether you’re self-employed or you’re working for someone else. If self-employed you’re likely to be offered jobs with a certain duration and you may find yourself without another job to follow next… so even if your hourly rate is good, there’s a degree of uncertainty that must be born in mind.

          • Peter:

15k to 35k a year depending on qualifications and experience. If you’re good and work hard at it, it’s not inconsiderable, is it?

    • Payne:

You don’t do this job for the money it’s the pride and satisfaction that your efforts will stand for time. This is totally at odds to the rest of the industry.
