Structural Engineer

Essential to the field of architecture and engineering is the structural engineer or civil engineer, who designs and oversees the construction of various structures such as buildings, bridges, roads or railways. This individual is responsible for the safety of the public who will use these structures.
This career is ideal for those who enjoy a great challenge and are interested in the urban landscape. Duties typically include calculating loads/stresses on structures, determining the strength of beams and foundations, deciding if a structure can function safely, researching design options, documenting research results for project lead engineers and assuming the role of the lead engineer for assigned projects. Other important duties include estimating probable construction costs, directing and supervising other designers and drafters, coordinating work with other professionals (i.e. architects, mechanical/electrical engineers) and handling routine contract administration.
This position typically requires a four-year university degree in structural/civil engineering. The successful job applicant must demonstrate strong problem-solving and communication skills, along with the ability to operate effectively within a team environment. The average salary for this position is around £47,000 to £52,000 per year.
