  • Can 17 year olds work? I’m 17 and need a job badly. A friend’s dad has a bakery and working there is something I’d love. But I’ve been told I can’t because of my age. Is it so? Can 17 year olds not work?

I’m no expert, but I think that whoever told you that may have got several issues mixed up. 17 year olds CAN work, under certain premises like that there be a 12h rest gap for every 24h, or a 30 min break for every 4:30 h worked, among others. But you can definitely work at 17.
      • Ben:
There’s also the issue of night shifts. Under 18s cannot work nights, however there are some exceptions, and if I’m not wrong working at a bakery would be one of them. If I were you I’d double check anyways.

  • are 17 year olds entitled to holiday pay? - I’ve been working in a warehouse for 6 months and I just recently asked for a few days off. They’re telling me I’m not entitled because of my age, but that doesn’t make sense to me as I have friends who do enjoy days of holidays. The only thing I can think of is that they may not want to give me days off until I’ve been working for a full year. Would either of these thinks be correct?

What they’re telling you does not make sense to me. You’re entitled to holiday pay as soon as you’re over school leaving age. As to your second question, a worker has a right to have paid holidays even if they have not worked for a full year, your annual leave begins to accumulate as soon as you start working. I hope this helps.
