A computer-aided design technician specialises in taking designs of objects such as engines and buildings drawn on paper and turning them into electronic images on a computer. Cad technicians often work as part of a team with other engineers and technicians. This means good communication skills are required as the image created has to conform to the specifications of the team leader or chief design engineer
Other skills required for this kind of design work include proficiency in technical drawing, an understanding of manufacturing and construction processes, and excellent attention to detail. Training is available through apprenticeships or a technical college course. Further training is often available on the job. Advancement opportunities include becoming a section or team leader

CAD technicians are required to use computer software to design plans for machinery and buildings for various industries, including construction, manufacturing, engineering, among others. People working with these computer aided design (CAD) software create 2D or surface modeling and 3D or solid modeling projects. The first model is required for flat representations, such as the design of a new vehicle. Solid modeling is required for 3D display of a component, allowing virtual tours.

CAD technician job placements in some companies, such as construction or engineering firms, offer apprenticeships for candidates. Requirements for these programmes are GCSE’s in science, engineering, math, technology, design, or any other relevant subject for this area. There are college courses to gain CAD skills offered by City & Guilds and BTEC including an Award in Computer Aided Design Parametric Modelling Level 1, Certificates and Diplomas in Engineering levels 2 and 3, among other courses.
