Working closely with veterinary technicians and assistants, the veterinary surgeon will be required to diagnose, treat and discuss rehabilitation with animal owners. Experience with MRI scanning machines, ultrasound and x-rays, as well as other equipment is required. The candidate needs to possess a caring, attentive and easy-going nature and have the ability to describe ailments and treatments to the animals' owners in layman's terms. Some farm and out of the surgery work may be required
Those in this position should be qualified, with either MRCVS or FRCVS, and be a member of the RCVS. Having at least two years’ experience will show the ability to prove their expertise and back up their six-year degree in vet science. An interest to learn more and focus on areas of expertise is a bonus, particularly with exotic or difficult animals
The salary structure for a qualified veterinary surgeon depends on the location and practice, but the average ranges from £25,000 to £39,500 including bonuses, though some individuals will earn more than this.

There are many schools, like the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), that offer Veterinary courses. Degree courses differ and may include specialisations in Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Science. Individuals should be prepared for the extended period in which it might take to complete their studies; which is up to six years. After completing training, a professional Vet should seek to be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). All other requirements such as physical stamina, health and capability must also be attained.
