Electrical estimators work closely with quantity surveyors, planning engineers, buyers, construction managers and sometimes in a team of estimators if the project is large. They handle the preparation, processing and submission of contract tenders by estimating the necessary costs incurred in the supply of certain products or services. They usually work a standard 40-hour week, although overtime may sometimes be necessary in order to meet tight deadlines
The work is mainly office based but there is often the need to travel to clients’ companies, so a driving licence is useful. The normal career route is to enter the electrical profession as either an administrator or a technician and to gain the necessary experience. Salaries range from £16,000 to £30,000.
