Continuous testing and upgrades, project scheduling, feedback to design and development departments, budget forecasting, scheduling and the preparation of test plans and new strategies are the key factors of the job of a tester.
The position, often referred to as a test analyst, involves checking the company’s finished product for quality and accuracy of design, with the job most often relating to software development, aviation and mechanical manufacturing and engineering industries.
Analytical and problem-solving skills at a high level are essential, as is time and people management and strong communications abilities. Experience in both manual and automated testing is an advantage and strong IT skills are a necessity.
The planning, prioritising and documentation of projects is an important park of the job. Most testers have a background in engineering, statistics or quality assurance, and the relevant Bachelors or Masters degrees are often a requirement. Average wages across the sector are between £30,000 and £35,000 per annum.
