Working in the biomedical science team, the scientists will be responsible for diagnosing patients with hepatitis, diabetes, food poisoning, HIV, cancer and meningitis, among other diseases. The role requires the analysis of faeces, urine, tissue and blood, and the use of automated testing procedures and computer-aided equipment.
Other tasks include identifying blood groups, maintaining accurate records, analysing cultures grown from samples, writing medical reports and taking part in research and development.
The candidate will have an honours degree in Biomedical Science or a science degree in feilds such as microbiology, chemistry, pathology, anatomy or biology. The candidate must also be registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and have research experience in a hospital laboratory. A person in this position must express good lab skills, have exceptional attention to detail and have good communication skills, as well as being sympathetic when dealing with patients
The average salary for a biomedical scientist is £32,250, depending on the employer. The earning potential with bonuses and experience is around £40,000.

Biomedical Scientist jobs require applicants to have a degree. It is recommended to have a course from The Institute of Biomedical Science. Requirements for these types of degrees are five GCSE’s/S grades (A-C/1-3) and two A levels/three H grades including Chemistry, Biology and Math as a minimum.

Biomedical Scientists need to be registered with the Health Professions Council. This association requires members to have one year of training in an approved laboratory and a biomedical science degree accredited by The Institute of Biomedical Science.
