Security guards patrol, safeguard and monitor any theft or fighting at the site where they are on duty. They are responsible for protecting the assigned site from law violators and detecting any type of disturbances that might incur losses for the client. The duties for this profession depend on whether the individual is employed for a mobile position or a static position. The guard may work in a specific location and work with security systems, such as alarms and close circuit cameras. Security guards closely watch over the property as well as the visitors. Many are assigned to monitor the various entries and exits of a building, while others may patrol on foot or by car.
The work also includes writing up daily reports about any disturbances that occur during the shift. In the case of an emergency, the guard must call the fire department or other service providers.
The requirements for this profession are usually the standard high school qualifications and the completion of security training, which is offered at several schools. Upon successful training, individuals may apply for security positions either in government agencies or in the private sector. Wages range between £6.20 and £6.00 per hour, depending on experience. Individuals are able to apply for a higher position, such as supervisor or security director, which offer a higher salary.
