A mechanical technician role includes the application of mechanical engineering theories and concepts to a variety of individual projects.
In general, the technician will work alongside engineers and physical scientists. In addition, they will develop, test and make modifications to mechanical equipment where necessary.
The candidate will need to have an analytical mind and an ability to problem solve in a logical way. The ability to work in a team and on your own is vital, as there are often many people in a team from different areas and backgrounds working on the same project.
Employees will be looking to employ candidates with a degree in engineering. If the candidate does not possess this, the degree will need to be closely related. In some circumstances, employees will be looking for candidates who have specialist training, which may include a Masters degree in that field.

A recommended path to be a Technician is to have a training scheme as a technician apprentice with Foundation Modern Apprenticeships. This is only for young people from 16 to 24 years old. For these courses, it is necessary to have Intermediate GNVQ/GSVQ level II or four GCSE’s (A-C)/S grades (1-3), including technology, math, and science.

Other relevant qualifications for this area are the National Qualification, National Certificate, Higher National Diploma, and Higher National Certificate. Requirements vary according to qualifications, but National Qualification and National Certificate require standard grades. High National Diploma and High National Certificate require 1-3 Highers.
