A geographical information system (Gis) is a computer system used for collecting, manipulating, storing, analysing and presenting geographical information. Those working in this area are responsible for producing data for a wide range of services including finance, insurance, retail logistics, transport, healthcare, telecoms and the environment. Typically a Gis officer will be involved in collecting geographical data by using technology such as GPS to record the location of assets, including flood defences, street lights and bridges, or transferring details on paper maps, such as the location of pipe lines or telecoms cables, into a digital format
They will also develop the programmes best able to store this information as well as tools for transferring data between systems. Geographical information system officers are also expected to produce the best ways of presenting this information to those who need it
Officers will spend much of their time with clients, explaining what the information they have collected means and how it might be used to achieve the best results. Excellent mathematical ability is essential. Depending on experience, the average salary is between £25,000 and £27,000 per year.

GIS area is open to graduates from various subjects, but it is recommended to have degrees or Higher National Diplomas in surveying, computer science, town planning, geography, cartography, and geographical information systems. Foundation degrees are also useful for this industry and they may include computing, applied geography, or applied computing

Another recommendation is having a postgraduate qualification in GIS subject because it is a good advantage for candidates who do not have relevant work experience or qualifications.
