Surveyors are professionals whose job it is to assess insurance risks at a particular site and advise the owners or managers of that site how to reduce those risks. This usually involves conducting detailed surveys, producing reports and working closely with clients, safety inspectors, underwriters and insurance brokers. A high level of technical knowledge and experience is required to accurately assess the risk to buildings, customers and employees
Most insurance surveyor jobs will go to graduates, although a degree is not necessarily prerequisite. Subjects employers will be looking for include maths, economics, law, business studies and management. Most positions will also require some level of experience in the insurance industry
Other qualities necessary for this line of work include the ability to communicate well and work as part of a team. A good grasp of IT is also often necessary as is confidence, motivation and the ability to work to a schedule. With more than three years’ experience, an incumbent can expect between £28,000 and £40,000 per year.
