Lecturers are required to facilitate learning and provide guidance to students in a specialised field on a tertiary level of education. It is also recommended that candidates have work experience in business or industry, and a school teaching qualification. People who want to teach vocational subjects need to have a Higher National Certificate, Higher National Diploma, professional qualification or an appropriate degree for that area.

There are some cases where applicants need to have a postgraduate qualification such as PhD, MSc, MPhil, MLitt, and MBA. For instance, lecturers for Higher Education will need a PhD as a minimum requirement.
