One of the top jobs in the business of news delivery is that of the news producer. The skills needed are the ability to prioritise stories as they come in, put them into a cohesive collection of items and produce the news program smoothly, to schedule and without fuss. This is a balancing act which requires good communication skills, no shortage of patience and technical know how, all rolled into one.
Experience counts for a lot, but the good news producer already has an established educational background with a good degree in journalism. Universities such as Cardiff or the London School of Journalism are two places where students can learn the basics of the trade
Another route into this role in television or radio is to work up from floor crew or the editorial departments to production. The ability to grab the essence of a news story and lay it out for the watching public is demanding but ultimately very satisfying for a top producer and it is a job which can attract a very good salary.
