  • Apprenticeship Does anybody know whether there are any requirements to get an apprenticeship as greenkeeper? Do I need to have had prior experience landscaping or gardening? I think I could do a good job of it; on top of this I love golf and have some knowledge of it so this could help me understand the needs of the course.

No formal requirements exist to take on an apprenticeship. If you do, I hear that you get very good training and a fairly reasonable wage. You should be getting at least 95gbp a week, recent surveys seem to point at an average of 170gbp per week.

  • Greenkeeper Salary Does anybody know how much does a greenkeeper earn? I had the idea that it was something in the region of 23k, but I’ve recently been told (at an interview) that the salary they’re offering is 15k. I find this pretty low!

    • Hunter:
I'm afraid that what you’ve been quoted is quite average. This is what you’d get with basic experience. Once you become more senior and gain experience you get nearer the 23k. It’s not very easy to go beyond 25K though.

  • How does one become a Greenkeeper? I have a diploma in horticulture, and have worked for a couple of years looking after the gardens of several manor houses around the country. They’re all part of the same business group. I love my job, in fact I love anything to do with plants and landscaping and their care. It’s for this reason that I’d like to try to see new areas, and I thought that greenkeeping could be a new challenge. Do I need to have golfing knowledge to opt to the job?

    • Aidan:
Hi Paul, I like what you said there about greenkeeping being a challenge. I’ve often heard people make comments about it as if it was the simplest thing on earth, while it can be quite challenging given the precision needed.
    • Bibian:
In response to your question, NO, golfing knowledge is not a must, though it is an advantage. As greenkeeper you need to know the different areas on a golf course as each of them has different requirements; having golfing knowledge makes it easier for you to see what’s required to be able to provide the best playing surfaces possible. In any case, it can only be a plus, even as a head start in relation to other players.
