Those working in the area of probation play a crucial role in the criminal justice system. Much of the work in this field is carried out by probation officers, who are responsible for assessing and limiting the risk of offenders, with a view to protecting the public and reducing crime.
Probation officers help offenders reintegrate into society while making sure they are made aware of the consequences of their actions. The work takes place in prisons, approved centres and the community, and often involves travelling to courts and other centres. Hours can be unsociable, which may mean working nights and weekends
Entry into the service is usually achieved by first gaining relevant experience as a volunteer, such as by working for Victim Support or by joining a youth offending team. With sufficient experience, it is possible to apply to a local trust and work towards a bachelor’s degree in community justice or a vocational qualification in probation practice. Salaries start at £19,000 per annum and can rise in time to £35,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
