Automotive technicians work either in main dealerships’ service and repair bays or in privately owned car repair workshops or garages. Cars, trucks and motorcycles are serviced and given oil changes, with parts replaced where necessary. A key part of the job is the identification of areas of concern pointed out by the vehicle owner and the diagnosis of the fault. Test driving the vehicle is often necessary, and experienced mechanics can often detect a fault by this process without running diagnostic tests
The most important qualification for this job is a fascination with engines and what makes them run. Other skills include knowledge of diagnostic procedures, familiarisation with tools needed and the strong interpersonal skills necessary to explain findings to the customer. Many applicants for this job have qualifications from either vocational or technical colleges, and a willingness to learn both by experience and by instruction is essential.
Salaries vary considerably according to the place of work and the experience of the applicant, starting at around £15,000 and rising to around £35,000.
