Hairstylists use their training to help customers maintain their hairstyle and healthy hair and scalp. Duties include shampooing, cutting, drying, colouring and styling. This position could also require selling beauty products such as shampoo and hairspray, while other salons will provide additional beauty treatments such as threading, nails and facials.
Some salons may require managerial duties to organise the salon and manage other staff members. Employees need to clean up after clients and will often be expected to answer the phones and make appointments
Applicants need a high school education and relevant on-the-job experience or GED certificate or vocational training. Most people entering the professional will start by performing menial tasks at the salon, such as shampooing and sweeping up. This position usually requires a 40-hour week, although working hours are often flexible depending on appointments. Salaries vary from salon to salon, with the average being £16, 000 per year.
