CAD technicians are required to use computer software to design plans for machinery and buildings for various industries, including construction, manufacturing, engineering, among others. People working with these computer aided design (CAD) software create 2D or surface modeling and 3D or solid modeling projects. The first model is required for flat representations, such as the design of a new vehicle. Solid modeling is required for 3D display of a component, allowing virtual tours.

CAD technicians usually perform many of the following tasks:
• Writing manuals for maintenance.
• Producing detailed drawings.
• Discussing designs with other professionals.
• Making drawings and calculations onscreen.
• Explaining designs to other people.

• Being able to meet deadlines.
• Having math and IT skills.
• Being able to work alone or with a team.
• Having analytical skills.
• Having good communication abilities.
• Being able to visualize in 3 dimensions.
• Being accurate and patient.
• Having understanding of construction methods.
• Having problem solving abilities.
• Being able to work under pressure.

CAD technician job placements in some companies, such as construction or engineering firms, offer apprenticeships for candidates. Requirements for these programmes are GCSE’s in science, engineering, math, technology, design, or any other relevant subject for this area. There are college courses to gain CAD skills offered by City & Guilds and BTEC including an Award in Computer Aided Design Parametric Modelling Level 1, Certificates and Diplomas in Engineering levels 2 and 3, among other courses.
