Around six million people work in the UK’s public service industry, with around 10 per cent of those civil servants. These jobs are based across more than 100 agencies and departments which help the government manage the country. Many of the civil servant jobs are office-based, while others can be found in libraries, hospitals and schools across the country
With such a large number of premises accommodating staff which work in this sector, security and safety are of paramount importance. As such, a range of security jobs are available in the public sector. Some of these jobs are in IT security, protecting public service systems from hackers and viruses. Others are more hands-on, where guards patrol premises and protect public property.
Those working in the public sector are well-known for earning much less than their counterparts in the private sector. However, benefits such as pensions can sometimes be more generous. Salaries vary according to position, but civil servants earn around £22,000 across the UK.
