The position of field service engineer often relates to IT equipment but includes all electronic equipment, including avionics, radar, missile control and communications systems and other facilities which use electronic installations of any kind. The on-site installation and maintenance of equipment of all types as well as analysis and repair of functions makes this a varied job involving day-to-day travelling as well as a commitment to good customer service. Engineers may also be involved in training entry-level juniors
Self-motivation and strong interpersonal skills are essential, together with practicality and adaptability to changing locations and diverse problems. Full knowledge of the product’s electronics and wiring systems and the procedure for analysing faults, a good level of written communication and the ability to work as part of a team are all necessary, as is discretion and honesty when dealing with clients. Required educational qualifications include HNC, HND or NVQ certification in relevant fields
Salaries in the sector are good, ranging from around £25,000 to £40,000, with benefits including allowances for meals, petrol and travel, dependent on the size and range of the employer.
