The general foreman acts as the supervisor for construction sites across the country. This individual may also be involved in mining/excavation projects, the manufacturing industry, road clean-up crews, and any other industry which requires job site management and accountability.
This person’s main role is to oversee construction work and deal with site foremen to secure a smoothly-run job site. To do this it is necessary for this individual to create an efficient work environment, keep production costs down and maintain employee morale. Other responsibilities cover the area of workplace health and safety. Reporting to a superintendent and submitting reports on worker performance and productivity are also key responsibilities. The work may take place at one job site, or may require travel to various sites and supervision of several teams.
Most firms will only hire a general foreman with sufficient experience. A college degree is not typically required for this position, although high school qualifications and/or college level schooling will help distinguish such an applicant from the rest. Supervising experience is a must, and experience/training in construction is a bonus. Most UK employers in this industry pay about £24,000 - £38,000 per annum.
