The nutritionist role requires researching nutrient supply and the affects on the body's functions, studying metabolism and the relationship of nutrients and genes. Devising specialist meal plans and educating the public or hospital patients on nutrition and what effects food has on their bodies are also part of the duties. Usually, the candidate will deal with those who are healthy, advise on food plans for athletes or simply help educate people in how nutrition can help prevent illnesses
The candidate for this position should have a good honours degree in food science, dietetics or nutritional science although a life sciences degree in biochemistry and human physiology is also usually accepted. Some employers will require specific A levels in science, too. For a senior position, a good level of experience and the ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally to clients is a must
For a junior nutritionist, the wages are around £12,000 - £14,000, and once fully qualified, a senior role including bonuses can see a salary of up to £41,500.
