Though experience in sales training is a plus, many positions are open to candidates who lack formal experience as a sales trainer. The ability to learn, strong communications skills, the ability to engage students, a strong mentoring style and at least some experience at the forefront of sales will be strong assets for candidates
Many roles will provide instruction and coursework to assist the trainer. Of course, a proven track record of effective teaching and a solid understanding of the principles of teaching, coaching and mentoring will usually be welcomed. Recognised relevant qualifications will be strong assets. Some positions may require a significant degree of training experience and others still will demand in-depth knowledge of the particular concepts, courses and/or products being taught
Though some sales trainer positions involve the teaching of general and specific sales methodology, others involve providing the sales team with sufficient technical product knowledge to help an individual or organisation meet sales targets. In any case, the job holder will play a key role in developing the sales or marketing units and can expect assessment or their ability to play a key role in their progress. Salaries typically vary between £20,000 and £40,000 in the UK.
