Au Pairs play a role assisting around the house, completing basic chores and taking care of children while their parents are working or away. They are sometimes responsible for the general cleaning, washing and laundry and often preparing food for children and the parents if they are working late
They will also commonly be responsible for getting the children ready and picking them up from school. Once home in the afternoon, an Au Pair would often be expected to play with the children or help them with the homework, depending on the parents’ wishes. They must also be available to work on certain weeknights should the parents wish to go out
No specific qualifications are required to be an au pair. Usually people between the ages of 17 and 27 are hired, who are confident, friendly and good with children. Many Au Pairs are recruits from abroad who wish to further their English.
The job holder should receive at least £55 a week, according to Home Office guidelines, but can earn more depending on the generosity of the family. They usually live in the family home and get enough time off each week to attend part-time courses if desired.
