The primary role of a pool lifeguard is to ensure all swimmers are safe and are at minimal risk of injury. If an accident does occur, the applicants need to have sufficient knowledge of first aid to effectively deal with medical requirements and procedures that arise. A pool lifeguard must have numerous skills and abilities to be successful in this position. Knowledge of the latest first aid procedures, being a strong swimmer, being assertive, having excellent problem solving skills, and being able to use rescue techniques when incidents arise are all key rquirements
A degree is not necessary to apply for pool lifeguard positions. However, being certified in first aid and CPR is a must. A proven background in swimming or other water related fields is beneficial, and experience in lifeguard environments, such as lakes or beaches, will definitely help candidates.
