Working predominantly in the public sector, a doctor is required to apply his or her medical knowledge gained from years of education in a specific field. From general practitioners (GP) to paediatrics, psychiatry, orthopaedics or emergency medicine, there are many different types of doctors.
Depending on which field of medicine, the doctor will monitor patients, examine them, deliver treatments according to the illness, and carry out specific surgical procedures. Recording data and the treatment of patients to help with investigations into certain conditions and illnesses is also required.
Doctors will also teach junior doctors, mentoring them as well as auditing their progression. After many years at medical school and successfully completing a degree in medical science, the candidate can then go onto to specialise in their favoured form of medicine. Doctors need to have great people skills and attention to detail, as well as familiarity with the technology used in their chosen field. They also need to be able to keep abreast of new developments in this rapidly changing profession
Depending on the level of experience, the field of medicine and the location in the UK, doctors can expect an annual salary of between £25,000 and £100,000+ for an anaesthesiologist, for instance.
