Jobs for cooks come in many shapes and sizes. The particular demands of each role will vary depending on the size of the kitchen and establishment, the volume of work, the style and standard of cooking and the number of people working in the catering department or kitchen
A basic level of experience will usually be required, though many positions will offer training as an attractive benefit. Most positions for cooks call for a reasonable degree of experience and some qualifications. Work can be found in educational institutions, guesthouses and hotels, pubs, restaurants and catering companies
Most roles will require the applicant to possess a recognised food safety / hygiene qualification. Higher levels of education, especially City & Guilds 706/1 and 706/2, NVQ and other qualifications in hospitality and catering are strong assets. Senior roles will demand the ability to plan menus, generate costings, order and control stock, prepare and cook dishes, supervise staff and ensure food preparation areas are tidy and clean
Remuneration tends to be on an hourly basis. Basic hourly pay starts at £6 and ranges up to about £7. Positions with greater responsibility can pay £8 - £9 per hour.
