Also known as cost engineers, estimators prepare, process and submit tenders for contracts. Working to the client’s particular requirements, they make estimates for products or services that take into account the cost of materials, transport, labour, equipment and plant hire, as well as general overheads such as rent, electricity and administration
Estimators generally work in a team, either with other estimators if it is a large project or with a number of different professionals, such as buyers, quantity surveyors, construction managers and planning engineers. The work is usually office-based but there may be a requirement to make site visits if working in the construction or engineering sectors
Good numeracy, analytical and communication skills are necessary for this position, as well as knowledge of legislation, manufacturing and costs. Training is normally on the job, but completing NVQ/SVQ in Project Control at levels 3 and 4 is recommended. Salaries are in the region of £21,000 to £30,000, or £29,500 to £42,000 for more senior positions.
