The materials engineer specialises in materials science, also known as materials technology, and is responsible for research, design, specification and development of materials which advance many technologies.
Key skills include a strong understanding of the behaviour and properties of diverse substances, from the original raw material right through to the finished product, including ceramics, plastics, chemicals, polymers, textiles, glass, industrial minerals and metals. Day-to-day work patterns include testing materials for their durability, analysing data through computer modelling, considering environmental pollution and waste issues, ensuring compliance with legal standards and developing prototypes
Efficiency in computer analysis of data, great communication and decision-making skills are important in this job, as are strong analysis and problem-solving abilities, an excellent understanding of mathematics, science and IT. The application of scientific reasoning to industrial and manufacturing situations is a must, as is commercial awareness.
A science, engineering or technology-based degree is required at entry level depending on the sector, with postgraduate study an advantage and previous experience not compulsory if qualifications are relevant to the sector.
Starting salaries average from £22,000 to £28,000 per annum, with the leading-edge technological sector paying the best and good opportunities for advancement to senior level posts.
