The job of maintenance fitter may involve replacement of worn-out or broken machine parts on the factory floor or may require the making of a specific part unable to be ordered. Experience with all welding techniques is essential, and fitters are also required to regularly inspect machinery as well as maintaining it as necessary. Fitters may also need to instruct outside contractors. The job often involves being on-call during unsocial hours if manufacturing continues 24/7. Health and safety precautions are mandatory, as fitters often work in potentially dangerous conditions.
The main requirements are mechanical, electrical and computer skills, with many employers willing to train employees on the job via apprenticeship programmes. Certification from a technical college is a help, as welding techniques will have been taught as part of the course and a restricted electrical license may need to be obtained. This is a highly-skilled job, with more vacancies nowadays as cash-strapped manufacturers try to keep costs down by repairing rather than replacing machinery.
Experienced fitters will draw salaries of between £25,000 and £35,000 a year, with entry-level applicants needing further training coming in at around £19,000.
