The job of professional bartender is more than a general bar staff job in that the employee will have become expert in serving drinks at a hotel or club bar. This is a social position, with a competent bartender able to multi-task in the sense of seeming to give full attention to listening to a customer’s conversation whilst mixing a complicated cocktail. The ideal candidate for this job will have some previous experience in a good establishment, and have references confirming character and skills.
A working knowledge of all types of drink is important and being able to produce such drinks quickly and efficiently will endear this person to both customers and employers. Some catering experience is useful and attending courses relating to the myriad of cocktails is a great advantage. Basic food hygiene and food safety certificates are always required for a job in catering, and can attract a salary of between £15,000 and £20,000 per annum, plus the potential for good tips.
