As well as preparing baked goods including pastries, cakes and breads, bakers often take on the additional responsibility of ordering supplies and materials, overseeing staff, and making sure that all ingredients are up to the required standard. They must be extremely disciplined and have the ability to plan in advance, as the slightest mistake can ruin a recipe
Good interpersonal and communication skills are also a must, as bakers are often in charge of a team of workers. As well as being responsible for hiring personnel, they will also have to deal with any work-related issues as they arise from employees. As the head of the team, a baker is also responsible for allocating work hours, schedules and wages
A certain level of creativity is extremely useful in the role as it requires the production of tried and tested recipes as well as coming up with new ideas
A baker’s wage depends on how many hours they are expected to work. A food hygiene certificate is often required by potential employers.
