Generally speaking, work as a health trainer is split between two main fields: health and safety issues, and social support/care. Positions involving first aid and health and safety will typically require the candidate to provide instruction on all key aspects of health and safety issues, food hygiene, and first aid in the workplace. Relevant qualifications will be required, as will teaching qualification, such as PTLLS, PCGE or DTLLS
Roles involving work in the community or providing social care can offer significant personal satisfaction, as well as great scope for career progress. Work will generally involve the ability to understand the target community groups, engage with them, and maintain beneficial relationships.
Health trainers in these areas will generally be tasked with addressing health and fitness inequalities. The ability to work independently will be prized, as will the ability to collect and monitor data. Experience with, and understanding of, various facets of community care is an asset. Knowledge of key pieces of relevant legislation or regulations, such as the Health & Social Care Act or induction standards, may be required
Work in community health training generally offers salaries ranging from £15,000 to £25,000. Health & Safety instruction, depending on the industry in which it is deployed, can pay salaries ranging from £20,000 to £40,000.
