One of the main tasks of the personal care assistant is to provide personal aid for elderly clients and physically or mentally disabled patients. They generally work at the client’s residence, although jobs in the field are also available in hospitals, care homes and medical centres. Tasks range according to clients needs, but could include duties like implementing a special dietary program or even doing a clients’ laundry.
Applicants wishing to become personal care assistants must possess compassion and excellent people skills and be able to communicate clearly. In addition, candidates need to be able to understand non-verbal communication, such as gestures and facial expressions. Applicants for the position need to be flexible, with a basic knowledge of nursing care techniques
Most employers require applicants to hold a qualification in nursing, the science of health, health care administration or other related fields. Expect a salary of around £25,000 per annum, often calculated on a hourly rate and dependent on job location and previous experience.
