Security Guards or security officers are required to take care of people, valuables or buildings. Their duties are closely related to procedures to avoid damage and theft cases. These guards can work for a large variety of companies, such as banks, retail shops, airports, and public institutions. They may deal with intruders by patrolling areas or checking closed circuit television.

A Security Guard usually performs many of the following tasks:
• Searching aircraft, luggage, and passengers at airports.
• Patrolling buildings.
• Writing reports for police.
• Welcoming customers.
• Controlling who goes in and out in events.

• Being honest and trustworthy.
• Having abilities to make quick decisions.
• Being able to stay calm under extreme cases.
• Having polite manners.
• Having suitable physical fitness.
• Being able to work with CCTV and other security equipment.
• Being able to memorise different faces.
• Having teamwork skills.
• Being able to follow instructions.
• Being patient and flexible.

Security Guard job placements do not require academic qualifications, but a good standard education can be an advantage for most application processes. Companies require a Security Industry Authority (SIA) license for this job. Some employers can check work experience and personal history up to ten years back and it is compulsory to declare any criminal conviction.

There are third party agencies that require the Security Industry Authority training or licence, having 18 years old or more, and criminal record checks. SIA training lasts four days for most candidates and may last less in some applicants that have previous security qualifications.
